A 2003 District Master Plan identified future project development at Shastice including enhanced playground areas, a new swimming pool, and a roof for the Siskiyou Ice Rink. The Mount Shasta Recreation and Parks District is currently (2019) in the process of updating their master plan.
Over the years development at Shastice Park has been funded by California Park Bond grants, McConnell Foundation grants, Ford Family Foundation grants, Quimby Act funds.
In addition to generous donations from Mt. Shasta Rotary, Mt. Shasta Youth Sports organizations, local service clubs and businesses, as well as many donations from families and individuals.
In August, 1964 the Recreation District’s goal to build a swimming pool for the community became a reality with the opening of the Harry L. Benton Memorial Pool. The culmination of many years of vigorous local fundraising, (spearheaded by Dr. Donald Ratley) and a generous donation from Mrs. Harry L. Benton (to her husband’s memory) made the construction of the pool on the Mt. Shasta High School property possible. Regretfully, after 38 years of operation the aging pool, in need of major renovation, was “retired” at the end of the 2002 season.
In the 2003 District Master Plan ,the construction of a new-pool at Shastice Park was identified as a possible addition to existing facilities. The Recreation and Parks District is currently (2019) in the process of updating and developing and new and more comprehensive Master Plan.
Community involvement in this process will be essential and the District will announce upcoming public input meetings as they are scheduled.
